My Ode to France by Dan Neuberger

Current Show Runs Through Sunday, June 14

The current show marks the 50th photography exhibition at Image City Photography Gallery and it is fitting that it features the work of Dan Neuberger, a founding partner. Dan has travelled to France numerous times over 60 years and his exhibit titled My Ode to France demonstrates his love of the subject and his exceptional artistic talent. In the East Gallery, Joseph Sorrentino's exhibit El Campo:  Images from Rural Mexico documents recent trips to Mexico with exceptional portraits of rural Mexico, where the difficult conditions and economy are challenges to the people.

Guest photographers in the exhibit are Scott Hendershot, Angela Possemato, Ann Elizabeth Rumrill, and Fred Weingarten. Additionally Bev Cronkite, Lynda Howland, Rick Mearns, and Don Menges, exhibit select works by Camera Rochester members. A total of nineteen photographers are exhibiting their work including Artist-in-Residence Gil Maker, Jim Patton, and David Perlman as well as Gallery Partners: Joel Krenis, Don Menges, Betsy Phillips, Gary Thompson, Phyllis Thompson, Sheridan Vincent, and George Wallace.  For full details of the show click here. To get a preview, check out our "Preview of the Show" link. The photo at right is Peter's Pick from Dan's exhibit titled Mondrianesque Facade. See the later article for commentary for "Peter's Picks."

We had another wonderful opening reception recently on another exceptional Spring evening, Compliments on the quality, creativity, and range of the work in the exhibition were expressed by many in attendance. If you haven't had a chance to visit, the exhibit runs through Sunday, June 14.

Picks of the Show
Peter Marr Picks his Favorites from the Exhibit

For each of our shows, we invite Peter Marr to pick his favorite photographs from the work of the featured photographers and the guest photographers. Peter always has quite a challenge with so many exceptional photographs to consider.

Picking Dan Neuberger's Mondrianesque Facade, from the French Rivera Series and shown in the first article, Peter notes it "really stands out for its incredible use of saturated colors and bold design." Peter's next choice, shown above, was Pablo, by Joseph Sorrentino, "whose powerful portraits have a vibrancey and poignancy that truly captures the intimacy and vitality of people who live and work in a clearly impoverished area of rural Mexico." Dining Room by Scott Hendershot, shown at left, is another of Peter's Picks; the photograph having "tonal gradations and detail that are exquisite" as well as "drama and mystery". In Waiting at the Market by Lynda Howland, shown below, Peter observed the photograph "to be technically and artistically exceptional, one could not have set up and posed this candid scene any better..."

You can read the full review that Peter has written for each of the four photographs on the Image City website, click here. We also have the Peter's Picks commentary on display near each of the four selected photographs. There you will have the best impressions when you see the photograph in the gallery setting along with the full review.

A big THANK YOU again to Peter Marr, who, with assistance by his wife, does such a wonderful job for this feature of our gallery.

Gary Thompson's Photo Tip of Month
Plan Ahead

Sunrise at Pemaquid Point II by Gary ThompsonIn photography and in life in general, it is useful to be organized and to plan ahead. This is especially true for sunrise photography.  I try to pre-run my sunrise shoots so that I know the day before exactly where I want to initially place my tripod the next morning. Even after driving to the image location I am usually still a little groggy from the required  ungodly wake up time.  It is therefore somewhat comforting to be able to set up my tripod in a good location without any deep thinking and with minimal stumbling around in the dark.

My example image is a  June sunrise at Pemaquid Point, Maine which required a rude 3:00 AM wake up. I had previously planned where to place my tripod, so all I initially needed to do was to safely negotiate my passage through the rocks to my pre-planned position. Even the passage through the rocks had been pre-planned and practiced the day before. When the sky began to glow and the sun rose, my adrenalin increased and I could then begin thinking more clearly and creatively. For the next hour and a half it was exciting to move around trying to capture the varying moods created by the warm sunlight and the long shadows it produced.
