Through the Student Lens 2011

Current Show Runs Through Sunday, April 17

Dog and Hay by Stacey HoffDon't be Afraid by Julia MerrellOur current exhibit is Through the Student Lens 2011. We are getting numerous comments from visitors praising the photographs and the exhibit. Featuring our selection of the best from the submissions by 17 local high schools you will find the work to be fresh, creative, and, in cases, edgy. Two examples of photographs that have been sold during the show are Don't be Afraid by Julia Merrell of Pittsford Sutherland (left) and Dog and Hay by Stacey Hoff of Honeoye Falls-Lima. We appreciate and are grateful to the underwriters of the show, Michael Hager, Museum Photographs, who printed all of the photographs, gratis, and Jason Campbell, Frameworks, who mounted them all, gratis. Don Menges, Gallery partner, produced the exceptional show.

Not to be overlooked are our two guest photographers, Mike Edwards, in the East Gallery, whose beautiful floral photography appeals to our desires to see the spring flowers and Mark Bangs, who is exhibiting a series of aesthetically pleasing and thought-provoking abstracts. Camera Rochester members with their winning photographs from their competitions are Sue Alden, Alex Pendleton, David Ridley, Lauren Smith, Patty Tauscher, Michelle Turner.

We round out the show with work by artists-in-residence, Jim Patton and David Perlman, and gallery partners Dick Bennett, Steve Levinson, Gil Maker, Don Menges, Dan Neuberger, Betsy Phillips, Gary Thompson, Phyllis Thompson, and Sheridan Vincent.

For full details of the show  click here -- where you will find a full list of the participating schools as well as a link for our Preview of the Show with select examples of photographs in the exhibit. There is no admission fee to visit Image City.
Two Course Offerings through Image City

Lightroom and a Photo Tour Day

Image City Partners are offering two upcoming courses. Steve Levinson is the instructor for a series to learn Adobe Lightroom. The classes will be held four Tuesdays, May 17 - June 7, at 7 - 9 pm. In describing the course, Steve says "My objective is instead of spending a great deal of time learning everything that you can do with any photographic software package, I will provide a clear work plan (series of things to do) so that you can take an image from your camera and make a high quality print. You will understand what each step does and how to use efficiently and in right order. That way you can spend more of your time on taking and producing great images."

Chimney Bluffs by Dick BennettThe second offering is by Gary Thompson and Dick Bennett, who will lead a Day of Photography at Sodus Point and Chimney Bluffs State Park. The event is Sunday, June 12 and includes a pre-meeting Thursday, June 9 at 7 - 9 pm and a review session on Wednesday, June 15. Beginner to advanced photographers are welcome.

Enrollment will be to a limited number of participants for each course so you will want to reserve your spot soon. The details are spelled out at this link to the Image City website.

Image City Critiques

At Image City on Wednesday, April 6 at 7pm

Each month, we have had a good turnout for Image City Critiques, our free program at the Gallery to provide participants an opportunity to engage in a friendly, constructive, and positive critique and review of their photographs. The sessions are held on the first Wednesday of the month. Join us for the next on Wednesday, April 6th from 7:00-9:00 pm. Please bring 2 or 3 jpg images or prints. Images may be on a CD or on a thumb drive and should be sized at most 1MB in size and at most 1500 pixels on the longest side. If you have any questions please contact Don Menges (dmenges@rochester.rr.com) or Gil Maker (gmaker@mac.com).  We look forward to meeting with you on Wednesday, April 6 at 7pm.
Gary Thompson's Photography Tip
Cropping can help to strengthen and Image

Denali Sunset by Gary Thompson

When editing images, look for opportunities to strengthen composition by cropping the images. Ask yourself, "What is the most relevant subject or compositional area in your image "? Then try various cropping shapes to emphasize that subject matter.

Try horizontal, vertical, panoramic, and square shapes to isolate this most important and usually most interesting subject matter. Eliminate negative space and extraneous subject matter and concentrate on what really is important. In other words, use cropping to zoom in on the essence of the image. A good cropping can change an ordinary image into an extraordinary one.

My example image, titled Denali Sunset, was taken in Alaska's Denali National Park. I  made the original image on 6x7 medium format film. When printing in the darkroom I used the full width of the negative but cut about 1/6th of the image off the bottom and approximately another 1/6th of the image from the top.  This left the middle 2/3rds of the image for the resulting panoramic print. Try to do your cropping with your camera and lenses when you are making images. The best option is to capture the essence of the composition in the field by composing and shooting carefully.  Panoramas can be achieved in the field if you are shooting digitally by taking several overlapping adjacent images and using a stitching program. However, the last opportunity to strengthen composition and/or salvage some images is cropping. Therefore, I always consider cropping when doing the final editing prior to printing.
