Holiday Show 2011

Current Show Runs Through Friday, December 23

Holiday Showcard

Our current exhibit is our 7th Annual Holiday Show. The Gallery Partners are exhibiting their photographs on the featured walls along with Jim Patton and David Perlman, Artists-in-Residence exhibiting work in the East Gallery. We also have nine invited guest photographers: Dick Beery, Dewey Fladd, David Kotok, JFK/AJVK, Steve Malloy Desormeaux, Scott Matyjaszek, Burt Segelin, John Solberg, and Ted Tatarzyn.

The exhibit has a wonderful, broad range of photography. You will find stunning architectural subjects from Chicago, Wolcott, New York, Rochester, and Santorini; intricate hand-cut and layered Photo-Sculputures; wildlife zebras, owls and butterflies; landscapes from Antarctica, Rochester, the Bristol Hills, Viet-Nam, Iceland and Savannah; gorgeous abstracts, elegant interior architecture, flowers, cookies, and bagels. Should we say we had something for everyone? You will certainly be entertained and impressed, especially when you consider the skill and effort of each of the 21 photographers to produce this show for your enjoyment. We hope you also consider us as the place to purchase a novel and exceptional gift for yourself or for someone special.

We thank our neighbor, Thomas J. Kroon, Financial Advisor with Edward Jones, who is a sponsor for the Holiday Show. His office is just down the avenue from Image City.

For this show we have extended our hours so that the gallery will be open on Mondays and Tuesdays. When you make a purchase during this show, you may remove it at the time of purchase to make it more convenient for "gifting". For full details of the show click hereBe sure to check out the link to the "Preview of the Show Gallery" to see a selection of the fine works in the show.

Peter's Picks
Peter Marr makes his Picks from the Current Show

For each of our shows, Peter Marr makes "Peter's Picks", a feature that we and our patrons enjoy. For the Holiday Show, Peter has picked four of his favorites from from the work by the Guest Photographers. His written commentary about each is published in full at the Image City Website -- Click Here to see the full discussion. For the newsletter, we have selected a part of the discussion and include a small image of each of those selected. We congratulate the four photographers for their "Peter's Pick."

Climate Change by JFK/AKVJFor JFK/AJVK 's Climate Change Peter noted that "Like all of the author's dynamic, artistic constructions, enthusiastic viewers should project their own imagination onto the photograph to see what they want to see. It is an impressive example where a photograph is experienced as a heightened emotional response, like music or poetry. The print itself is a tour de force of impressive bold vectors and arcs, interfused with ethereal flowing elements that exude flair, excitement and pizzazz. The color palette is superb, with huge swathes of warm red, orange and yellow hues that illuminate the right hand side of the frame, before sweeping into deep blue and black expanses on the left, definitely representative of a stark climate change from the hot to cold. Out of this enigmatic setting, akin to a phoenix rising from the ashes, emerges a beautiful youthful maiden, her golden dancing hair impressionistically mirroring her dress detail, whilst above her head there is a majestic swirl of colors that eventually vanish into the cold, black sky..." read more.

Jeckly Island 1 by Steve Malloy DesormeauxIn selecting one of Steve Malloy Desormeaux's photographs Jeckyl Island 1, Peter felt that "This is an impressive, idyllic landscape, where the magical, diffuse lighting reinforces tranquility and pervading charm. Together with the serenity and visual wonderment, one can enjoy the almost total silence, no crashing waves, only the fleeting murmur of a wave softly lapping the shoreline, no raucous gulls to disturb the quietness, no human or animal intrusions to invade the peaceful panorama. This is a slice of heaven on earth for everyone to enjoy. One is very aware of the stark, powerful structure that effortlessly frames the endless stretch of burnished sand, together with a sliver of gently moving sea water, and a large expanse of cloudless sky, which through the faint haze you can discern the remnants of a setting sun that has just disappeared over the horizon. Could this elegant formation be an artistically shaped piece of driftwood, or could it be the remnants of a large tree, which once graced the seashore, only to become a victim of the relentless erosion that is all to common on this exposed coastline?......." read more

Santa Fe, NM by Scott MatyjaszekFor Scott Matyjaszek's Santa Fe, NM Peter observed that "I have long been an admirer of Scott's "Photo-Sculptures," and this superb rendition of a detailed element from an old door is illustrative of his innovative and distinctive style, an evocative piece with joyously varied colors and creative design. There is something deep and profound about a collage, and it is the key to escape from the old way of seeing, as it makes your eyes realize there is a change of surface, which gets us closer to our experience of reality. In this quintessential collage, the door has been intentionally left slightly ajar, tantalizingly inviting the viewer to enter in to explore the hidden secrets we know must be there. For once, I will pass up this opportunity so that I can visually and mentally traverse the exterior, where there is an abundant variety of vibrant colors and a myriad of impressive surface textures that combined are just priceless. The awesome design features are highlighted by the two weathered, curved door handles, where the strong side lighting dramatizes their form and shape, including forming two unique artistic shadows........." read more

King Creche PatternsWith his fourth choice, Ted Tatarzyn's King Creche Patterns noted that "It was extremely difficult to select which one of Ted's outstanding photographs to comment further on, for they are all impressive and inspirational. I finally chose King Creche Patterns, for not only is it an extraordinary image in its own right, it beautifully illustrates that along with its close cousin, the Emperor penguin, these species are true wonders of the animal world in their relentless life-long struggle for survival in one of the harshest environments on earth. Ted's idyllic image is a scenic extravaganza, where from a deep-blue oasis in the rocky terrain, we follow the imposing s-curve of a swift-moving antarctic stream, through the vast densely-packed colonies of King penguins, where the latter, fill every available land space, and even spill over into the frigid waters. Happily on this rare sunny day, the penguins, interspersed with groups of unattended fluffy brown juveniles do not have to huddle together for protection against a freezing blizzard, so they can all enjoy a short summer recess. ........" read more

Make Accurate Observations and Keep Careful Records on Photo Trips

Woodland Path by Gary Thompson

Make good observations and keep careful records (dates, times, locations, comments, etc.) of all your outdoor photography ventures. By consulting these records you will save much time and be able to make good plans for productive return photography trips.

I like to photograph in Letchworth State Park around Memorial Day and during the first week of June. Over the years I have noted that Dame's Rockets flowers seem to blossom in several areas of the park during that time period.

They usually peak for about a week so I try to plan at least one trip into Letchworth during that time. Knowing that I will generally do some work with the Dame's Rockets and because there are many water falls and cascades in Letchworth, I usually study the weather predictions and try to be there on a rainy or overcast day when there is little wind. These are the conditions that I seek when photographing these subjects.

By taking many of these Spring Letchworth trips, over time I have been able to make many good images of the Dame's Rockets in very nice woodland settings. My example image is titled Woodland Path and was taken on one of those Letchworth ventures.

You may find it helpful for your planning to note that my records over the years indicate that Spring in the Rochester area seems to be occurring about one week earlier and that our Autumn foliage seems to be peaking about 10-12 days later than twenty years ago. Phyllis and I have found it necessary to schedule our photo trips about a week earlier in the Spring in order to correctly time the blossoming of Rhododendron along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Similarly we have had to move our trips to northern New England one week later in order to effectively time the peaking of the Autumn foliage. Accurate observations and good record keeping, over time, will enable you to make good adjustments in scheduling your photo ventures.

Some websites that offer to provide information on the status of the Spring blooms and Fall foliage are good, unfortunately many seem to be more interested in promoting tourism than providing accurate information.
